Yellowstone National Park is amazing in the fall. This time-lapse video shows the beauty of the park and why it is such a famous place. This blog post is about how Stephen Smith filmed the Yellowstone time-lapse.
Grand Teton Nation Park
First stop, Grand Teton National Park. The footage at the beginning of the time-lapse video was filmed in the Grand Teton Nation Park in the Fall. Because of that beautiful fall foliage surrounds the majestic Teton mountains. Stephen wanted to get footage that was memorable so he filmed a lot of his shots at sunrise or sunset. In Grand Teton Nation Park he filmed a sunset and sunrise at Oxbow Bend. The clips can be seen around 00:06 – 00:15 and 00:16 – 00:26. As the sun dropped behind the peaks of the mountains all of the other visitors seemed to disappear. One of the challenges with time-lapse photography is that it takes a long time and you often find yourself alone. “However, the sunrise at Oxbow Bend was a complete circus”, said Stephen. It had wall to wall photographers with not enough room to fit everyone who wanted to take photos.
Below is an image of Stephen shooting a time-lapse with his trusty Syrp Genie on a travel slider. In this picture below you can see the Genie box came in handy for composing the shot. Since the Genie is easy to use and works with most sliders making it a great addition to Stephen’s photography gear.
As the sun rose and started to blast the mountains with light, ducks came out to visit the photographers on the river bed. Mist then covered everywhere making for an exciting time-lapse clip.
Yellowstone National Park
In Yellowstone, we were blessed with a day of sun. “Something that felt to rare as I was pelted with rain for the rest of the trip,” said Stephen. With this great luck with the weather Stephen captured time-lapses of the Lower Falls. The first trail to capture this magnificent water fall is the Red Rock Trail. A trial most don’t know and isn’t even marked on Google Maps. It is a steep descent down to the bottom of the waterfall. Once Stephen and his family made it to the bottom Stephen realized that he forgot his tripod plate. Due to this, he had to run all the way back up the trail and then back down one more time. Passing other hikers both ways. If kids were good sports and didn’t complain about all of the extra time they had to spend at that location.
Stephen almost missed his chance to film a sunrise on Yellowstone lake. He missed the exit and couldn’t find a place to turn around for miles. “Driving in the dark in Yellowstone can sometimes be a challenge,” said Stephen. Once he made it to the parking lot he had to run fast to get everything set up in time. “There was a nice break in the rain to capture part of the sunrise and the end results look fantastic,” said Stephen.
Another adventure worth mentioning about this trip is our hotel by Old Faithful. Someone a crossed the hallway decided to smoke in their room at night. We were woken up by a loud blasting smoke alarm and had to exit the hotel into the cold somewhat rainy outside. This was the last night of our trip and all of the footage was left in our hotel room. “As fire trucks started to arrive I got really nervous that the hotel was really on fire,” said Stephen. Luckily everything was ok and since Stephen was awake. He decided to get some night photos of Old Faithful.
